What is Brentford Boat Club?

Brentford Boat Club is a volunteer-run rowing charity founded in 2023. We provide access to rowing for young people aged 13 to 18, regardless of background or previous experience, and support them to develop on and off the water.

Who can join the club?

The club is open to all young people aged 13 to 18. No previous rowing experience is required and ability is not a barrier to entry. We welcome beginners and support those who want to progress into competitive rowing.

Does my child need to be sporty to join?

No. Many members start with no rowing or sporting background. Rowing rewards commitment, teamwork and consistency rather than early talent. Fitness and confidence develop naturally through training.

How do young people usually join?

Most new members join through:

  • Learn-to-row courses
  • Holiday clubs
  • School or youth organisation referrals
  • Personal recommendation or invitation

These routes allow young people to try rowing before committing to regular training.

What does “Learn. Train. Race.” mean?

It describes the pathway the club offers:

  • Learn: Free and, supported introductions to rowing
  • Train: Structured squads and regular coaching
  • Race: Opportunities to compete at local, regional and national level

Not every member races. Participation and development always come first.

Where is the club based?

Brentford Boat Club was born in Brentford. While the club works towards a permanent Brentford boathouse for land training, we currently access the river Thames from Dukes Meadows near Barnes Bridge.

Is rowing safe for teenagers?

Yes. Rowing is a low-impact sport that builds strength and fitness with a relatively low risk of injury when coached correctly. Safety is central to all club activities, both on land and on the water.

What safeguarding measures are in place?

  • The club is governed by volunteer Trustees.
  • Coaches are experienced and appropriately trained.
  • Safeguarding policies and procedures are in place and followed.
  • Sessions are supervised and age-appropriate.
  • The welfare of young people is a priority at all times.

How often do members train?

Training frequency depends on age, squad and experience level. Beginners typically train once or twice a week, with opportunities to increase commitment as confidence and interest grow.

Does the club compete?

Yes. Brentford Boat Club competes in local, regional and national competitions. The club has already achieved strong results and aims to build on this success.
Racing is optional and appropriate to each member’s development.

What are the benefits of rowing for teenagers?

Rowing supports:

  • Physical fitness and healthy routines
  • Mental wellbeing and resilience
  • Teamwork and social connection
  • Individual responsibility and confidence
  • Reduced screen time and outdoor activity

Participation in sport is also linked to improved focus and academic outcomes.

How much does it cost?

  • Some learn-to-row courses are free or subsidised.
  • Club membership fees are kept as affordable as possible. Please enquire for the different membership options.
  • No specialist equipment is needed to start.

As a charity with a mission to make rowing accessible to all young people, the club works to ensure cost is not a barrier to participation.

What equipment does my child need?

The club provides boats and rowing equipment. For training, young people usually need:

  • Sports clothing suitable for outdoor activity
  • Trainers
  • Warm layers and waterproofs when required

Specific guidance is provided once a young person joins.

How is the club funded?

Brentford Boat Club is funded through a mix of donations, grants, fundraising and modest membership contributions.

As a volunteer-run charity, funds are directed towards coaching, equipment and access programmes.

How can parents support the club?

Parents and carers can support the club by:

  • Encouraging regular attendance and commitment
  • Volunteering time or skills where possible
  • Supporting fundraising and events

All support helps the club reach more young people.

How do I find out more or register interest?
